POET CEO on Cellulosic Progress

During Trade Talk at the annual convention of the National Association of Farm Broadcasters (NAFB), POET Founder & CEO Jeff Broin talked with several farm broadcasters. He's pictured here in one of those many interviews. 2011-11-10_07-40-24_799

One of those interviews was with Jody Heemstra of KWAT Radio in Watertown, S.D. Domestic Fuel got a copy of the seven minute interview and posted it on their blog.

Broin talked about the recently completed corn corn crop residue harvest said that POET has made "tremendous strides" developing commercial cellulosic ethanol. He also talked about how POET will integrate cellulosic ethanol production with its existing corn ethanol plants and the benefits that will bring to both processes.

Press coverage of LIBERTY Day cellulosic ethanol harvest demonstration

The opportunity to view pre-commercial biomass harvesting equipment that will collect feedstock for cellulosic ethanol proved as irresistible to members of the press as it did to farmers in the Emmetsburg area. There was quite a lot of news coverage as you can see from our news page. Here are a few of the online highlights:

Ken Anderson of Brownfield Ag news posted seven audio clips of speeches and interviews with speakers, farmers, POET team members and agricultural equipment manufacturers on their site.

KTIV-TV out of Sioux City, Iowa posted several news clips to their web site: Farmers sign up to deliver cobs to Emmetsburg, IA project, Cellulosic ethanol plant promises jobs, freedom from foreign oil, and Gen. Wesley Clark: 'We need E15 right now.'

Chuck Zimmerman posted tons of content to his blogs Domestic Fuel and AgWired as well as photos and videos that are worth checking out. Here's one of POET CEO Jeff Broin's speech:

Finally, there was an extremely complementary opinion piece about the event from the nearby Estherville News. Among other things, it said: Corn-based ethanol is in fact the best thing to come down the road for Iowa farmers, Iowa's economy and the environment for a very long time. Except for cellulosic ethanol, of course. We agree.

MPR: Cellulosic ethanol pushes ahead

Mark Steil of Minnesota Public Radio visited our headquarters recently for a feature on cellulosic ethanol. The piece was on the radio today. Here's the lead:

Ethanol made from something other than corn has gotten a lot of hype but so far has little to show. Critics like to joke the success of cellulosic ethanol has been "five years away for the last 20 years." It's a jab at an alternative energy source which everybody seems to love, but no one can make. But that could be changing. A South Dakota company, POET, has one of the handful of small-scale pilot plants successfully making ethanol from plant fiber, things like corn cobs and wood chips.
